Huevos Rancheros: Lincoln

Randomly found this place in Pasadena doing a search for HR’s. It sounded promising even tho I figured it was gonna be one of those obnoxious foodie type places where people like to hang out and pretend to be on stage. But maybe I’d get lucky with a good dish like over at Huckleberry. No lines in any case, fuck it, let’s park and see.

Aww crap, they tricked me, the line was inside! I would’ve left under normal circumstances cuz waiting for breakfast is for chumps, but the line seemed to be moving fast. Plus they have some nice looking pastries, that should tide me over. You order up front, take a number, and find a seat. Unfortunately, all kinds of thoughtless fools were saving tables for people way in the back of the line so I had to ask someone if I could share their picnic table. Ugh, this social seating blows.

After some decent coffee and rhubarb tart we head to the main affair, the Huevos Rancheros! The call them Lincoln Huevos Rancheros, I guess cuz they’re afraid you’d think they came from a place down the street. Not a bad first visual impression when the dish arrived. But let’s break it down, shall we?

Are white beans the new black beans? We will have to wait and see but at least they were soft and tasty, even though I hate when they do that whole layered bean crap. The eggs had a bit of green tomatillo sauce that was okay and oddly reminded me of a jar of Herdez or something similar. I wouldn’t put it past them. There’s a bit of needless guacamole hiding under those micro-greens and some funky/off/fermented mushed tomatoes which I had to push to the side. That was a bit odd as the rest of the ingredients are fresh and of good quality. Well, except for the biggest disappointment in their version of HR’s, which is that they didn’t have a fried corn tortilla underneath and instead opted for a handful of corn chips. I’ve seen it work at other places but they went the route of really shitty mass-produced garbage corn chips, most likely Mission brand.  Did I mention this plate costs $10.50? If they are too lazy to make their own they should at least use something acceptable like Fortaleza. The eggs were good but I got one that was both runny and overcooked, that’s some effort! To round out the dish they add what they call cilantro rice but its just dried out basmati rice. Neh pollos.

My partner got a tasty dish of parmesan eggs, Ima get that next time. Skip the HR’s.
