Huevos Rancheros: Vips Nezahualcóyotl, DF

A long time ago, well I guess about 12 years ago, I took some notes and some pictures of a potential HR review when I was down in Mexico City, in the (for some reason) feared suburb of Nezahualcóyotl. I found those notes this week as I was sorting thru my mess and deciphering if any of this stuff I’ve accumulated gave me JOY. Hmm, good question.

Well, I do enjoy the search for new HR’s to review. My hosts were worried when I decided to go find some beer by myself at a late hour. Sure there were the usual extra-legal activities happening all around, but nothing beyond the scope of life in LA. Later I learned people were talking about me, wondering who I was and why I was walking around their hood. Ha, nothing ever changes.

We went to the VIPS at a late hour, but they serve breakfast at all hours. Might as well take advantage of this opportunity, or at least that was prob what I was thinking. I doubt I would do that now. They gave me some melon with my meal and even added some limes for me to squeeze on ’em!

Plus it came with coffee and pan birote.

The HR’s! Now that I think about it, I don’t remember anything of how they tasted. I’d already started writing up this review based on my assumptions of the pictures but luckily I DID find some crap notes I took during that visit. Woo hoo! Yay me.

At the time, back in late October of 2007, this dish was 45 pesos, which meant it was around $4.50 and I noted it was “expensive-ish”. The beans with cheese “were very good”. There was a lightly fried tortilla underneath, and the dish had fresh eggs. The blended sauce was made with “quality” tomatoes and was appropriately spicy. So it says, according to my notes. The onions were sliced “very thin and tasty”, tho I don’t see any. Whatever, I could be wrong.

There you have it, a super old and useless review. Let me thank it for it’s service as I prepare to forget about it forever. Does the Goodwill take blog posts? Fuck it…to the trash!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen huevos rancheros in a non tourist restaurant in Mexico. Or a burrito. I always thought they were a norteamericano invention. These look great though.
