I didn’t like their version of Huevos Rancheros. But I’m not going to judge them too harshly because I had a good time.<\/p>\n

We were meeting friends. To catch up and have a nice Sunday breakfast. Taking it easy.<\/p>\n

I know things about places, so I was gonna get the veggie omelette, a safe if boring regular choice. But then I saw this compa<\/em> and his beautiful Charlie Brown<\/a> style hat and I felt obligated to sample the “$9.75 Delicious Spanish Sauce.” How can I turn down a smiling-but-forlorn looking man, especially with those dark bags under his eyes, as if he’s been tossing all night wondering how he’ll make the next payment on the horse stable. He prob has kids to feed as well. Huevos Rancheros with Delicious Spanish Sauce, please!<\/p>\n

We were having a lively conversation, something about the difference between Australian and New Zealand accents. The plate arrived along with that film developing on top of the cooling Delicious Spanish Sauce. That lead to a discussion about the pronunciation of words in their Spanish version or their Anglicized form. The thick but bland tomatoey sauce made of chile powder and flour had chunks of celery, huge chunks with crunch and gnawing involved. I can’t bring myself to say Los Feliz <\/a>the way real Americans do. The eggs were slightly overcooked. Is it to affect a sense of authentic or to distance yourself from an ethnic context? No crispy tortilla, that’s for sure. Somehow that spirited discussion about people and language got mixed into this mediocre example of HR’s. Could this plate somehow represent that antagonism between two cultures trying to fit into a common space?<\/p>\n

Nah, this plate was just crappy. But that’s okay.<\/p>\n

If you pronounce Spanish words mostly like a Mexican, you’ll come here for the good times. Not the Huevos Rancheros.<\/p>\n
