I’ve been seeing other parts of the city, some of the supposedly nicer areas that I had been purposely avoiding for a long time, and it turns out I haven’t been missing out on much and neither are you, unless you get your sense of self or worth from fancy clothing shops, gimmicky boutiques, and thematic restaurants. Other than those missing but overrated aspects, we have a decent and vibrant little town here in Lincoln Heights, with constant change and some interesting characters to liven things up. About 2 minutes after taking this picture, and crossing Broadways towards the Big Saver, I got to experience what happens when an older chola drops a handful of coins on the sidewalk: if you try to help her pick them up she will yell out “that’s my change!” as if you were about to abscond with her coins. Luckily, I wasn’t the unfortunate do-gooder this time, it was some poor paisano that didn’t understand why a bit of help would lead to such a hostile challenge. An old chola might seem like a cool and fun icon, but just wait ’til you have to deal with them on a regular basis: romance lost!

So yeah, click ahead to read a short guide of what’s been happening around our dear LH.

That first pic above is kinda cool, advertising some invisible Car Wash, with no date or location. You gotta love it.

The DWP building has been undergoing some changes as of late, and its supposedly going to be the Lincoln Heights Community Resource Center. They’ve been doing some work inside and I’m looking forward to seeing it open, as the last time they fixed this place up they kept it closed for many years with a paid guard on duty during all that time. That was a waste. They might want to change the Mayor Hahn reference before they open though. Just a suggestion.

There were a few events happening Saturday in commemoration of the Chicano walkouts that happened 40 years ago, the ones that were meant to bring attention to the discrepancies in funding and educational programs of Eastside schools versus those on the Westside, but luckily that’s all been taken care of and all the poor kids get just as good an education as the kids from better backgrounds. Yes, we live in a super awesome city of leveled playing fields. Ha, ha.

Ed Fuentes has some pics from the March, with more to come.

I wasn’t going to mention them again, as this tortas de camaron business has been going on for too long. And nobody appreciates it when you repeat the same info, over and over again. But I unexpectedly had a great example of the dish at La Morenita on 2620 N. Broadway, a place I hadn’t visited in a long time. With a savory and very spicy red sauce, and even some speckled chile flakes on the nopales, this has been the best and freshest example of the lenten dish that I’ve experienced. Moist and fluffy tortas topped with an exquisite red salsa, and perfectly cooked nopales, it deserves a mention. And there it is!

If you didn’t make it to the Walkout events, you could have been enjoying the Tax Marathon! It’s for ninos con cancer. From the flyer: “Come and enjoy to the max, we will have DJ, Food, Gifts, and lots of tax knowledge!” Party!

Is Monkman down for the count? (That name just rolls off the tongue!) I’m looking forward to see whats on the menu of a Rico Chinese Bistro.

Hats off to Tipsy for creating a logo that matches his tagger name. Saw this collection of messages on Broadway and Daly, addressed to some poor soul that must be shaking in his/her boots. The pink poster starts off like this: “Don’t talk to me. Don’t be friendly to me. Don’t try and make me feel better. Don’t relax. I will wipe that smile off your face.” Yikes!

Well that’s all to report.
