The Catman of LH

catman1.jpg

Even though I mostly see him feeding pigeons, I’ve been calling this older gentleman The Catman since I first spotted him feeding cats at the Bi-Rite parking lot on Griffin and Broadway. He would show up during the evening hours and out of nowhere a bunch of cats would congregate for a late meal. Sometimes I’d go by and see the cats waiting, with the catman nowhere in sight. It’s an odd thing to see cats hanging out on a busy corner with cars and people going by, acting all nonchalant. I haven’t seen them or their caretaker at that corner in awhile, but I did see him buying cat food at the dollar store kitty corner (!) from the Bi-Rite, so they must be getting fed somewhere. I should have taken a pic when I had the chance, oh well. But I do have a few of pigeon feeding in action! Click ahead if yer interested.

Huevos Rancheros: Loteria Grill

hr_loteria1.jpg

I usually don’t have a reason to be out on the westside, but this past week I was there a few times so I decided to try out the HR’s from Loteria Grill, some little stall in the Farmers Market that gets lots of press and adoring fans. Supposedly this is one of the only places you can get “authentic” Mexican food around these parts. That’s gotta suck. On a rainy afternoon I ordered the plate above: I was expecting (maybe even hoping?) to not like the dish but it was quite decent, with a spicy salsa ranchera, properly cooked eggs, and an oil dipped tortilla. The menu says “crisp corn tortilla” but that’s hardly ever true at most places, and it wasn’t here. They also give you a side of mashed potatoes with chiles which is a nice surprise, and some black beans in a styrofoam cup, though I don’t understand why they can’t just put them on the plate. It’s a good dish, but at $8.75 and with no chips and salsa, it’s pricier than it needs to be. There’s nothing authentic about an expensive Mexican breakfast dish. And even though that’s a good enough reason to not come back, I actually did..

Liars

swines.jpg

I hate liars. Especially those that try to deny where they come from. Lots of people that grow up on the Eastside can’t wait to move out to some shitty suburb so they can claim to be from West Covina, Montebello, or Chino Hills, anything but the working class and possibly dangerous neighborhoods they grew up in. They’re all fucking stupid, self-hating pendejos more concerned with erasing their histories rather than understanding what that upbringing meant. Good riddance. But I find it even more asinine when a company or restaurant tries to obfuscate the world around them. Take a look at this sign for some San Antonio Winery owned lofts in Lincoln Heights, touted as “downtown living.” Whatever. Yer in LH fools, not downtown, get used to it.

Even worse is La Serenata de Garibaldi; they started out in Boyle Heights and still have a restaurant there, but their website describes the site as being in Downtown L.A. Mamones. You don’t have to be proud of where yer from, but being ashamed or trying to deny that fact is just plain wrong and useless.

Recent Burnings

burn_cart.jpg

Either by accident or intent, things burn. Here are two recent findings that have succumbed to flames. The first, a plastic shopping cart from some faraway Target shopping store has been afflicted by heat and its left side has given way. If you get this cart at your next visit you might want to stick to larger purchases, like coffee machines and pillows. Smaller items will likely escape this ambulatory plastic cell.

Huevos Rancheros: El Chile

chile1.jpg

I seem to have fallen behind on my HR reviews as I have more HR eating experiences than I do posts. I’m not sure if it’s worth catching up as I’m already forgetting some of the details. Yeah, I usually don’t take notes, even though I should. Oh well, que se la va ser? This one I don’t mind quickly filing away, as I’m not particularly inspired to come back to El Chile.
