Tofuteria Closed?

For the past 2 weeks everyones favorite source for tofu in Lincoln Heights has been closed.

With only a sign that reads “Close for Today”

Yet inside it looks a bit barren and as if some changes are afoot. Hmm, I sure hope they haven’t shut down. Come Phat took over this spot back in May of 2006 and they seem quite popular, supplying LH with Asian greens and staples plus lots fish and shrimp to both the Latino and Asian communities. It would be a major loss if they’ve shut down.

I came by again on Friday to see what’s up. The guy looking in told me that there was a fire and that they are remodeling. I sure hope he’s right. I asked “where else are we going to get our tofu?”

He just laughed.

LAX-C is your next best bet, I reckon. 1100 North Main Street, near Ann Street.

That place gives me the creeps. I was looking thru the refrigerated items and saw a bunch of open packages, meats hanging out all dry and dessicated, and some expiration dates over 2 years old! I stick to the utensils and dry good there.

Oh no! So sad! I love that place. They’ve been there forever! I’ve found some items there for $2 that Vons would carry for $6. LAX to me looks shady. I try not to go there but they do have some things that are a great deal. And they carry items you can find nowhere else.
