Let’s step out on this cool and overcast day for a comforting breakfast of HR’s! Now where shall we take our seat this time? I noticed lettering on the window that said “Desayunos”, I think this place in East LA is calling my name!
Tome asiento, donde guste.
I like this make your own damn chips approach, just some crunchy fried tortillas and a side of tasty hot salsa roja. Ramon Ayala cd playing in the background, with all the hits. One of the speakers is blown though, so it sounds a bit rattly. But hey, it’s Ramon Ayala! Friendly and attentive staff quickly take my order. Looking good!
Well then. Lot’s of cheese, of the jack variety. Minor infraction. A bit of salsa ranchera, could use more I suppose. Okay beans and rice, nothing spectacular. Cut, tear, taste. Hmm, no fried tortilla underneath. Lost a few points there. Should I swap it out for the one in my chips basket? Thinking, thinking…maybe it’d be a bit rude. We proceed.
Major infraction: eggs cooked super hard, basically a boiled egg, only fried. Look at that stiff yolk! Sorry about this pic of a half eaten plate, but at least you’ll get the idea in regards to the egg. The basket of handmade corn tortillas was nice.
Nice little place, but I’m avoiding the Huevos Rancheros next time. Even if they are reasonably priced at around $5.50

I have never, ever – in Chicago, nor Durango, nor Laredo – ever had a fried tortilla under my huevos rancheros. Is that a California thing?
QF,
You are missing out! Get with the times homie!
QF, Google Huevos Rancheros, almost every recipe calls for a fried tortilla, almost every Google Image shows a fried tortilla. I’m not picky though, I’ll even eat them with bagels. “oy vey”
you should be thankful the eggs were totally cooked, that way you won’t get sick
I’m well aware of the risks, and if I’m going to take said risk I at least expect them to do their part to make it worthwhile! 🙂
Lo carb Huevos Refritos – que mas quisiera?
Lorena – I have eaten hundreds of raw eggs on rice or with fermented beans. Not over easy or sunny side up or soft boiled – cold and raw. I’ve never gotten sick, only a bit gassy. So it’s a Friday-only thing to eat nowadays.
