Huevos Rancheros: Astro Burger

hr_astro1

Normally I don’t bother with the HR’s at burger joints since they tend to be universally disappointing. Overcooked eggs are common, often covered with a thoughtlessly made salsa, or worse, pico de gallo. But I had a feeling about Astro Burger. They make a good veggie burger, flame broiled for that smoky touch, and they seem to have some better Mexican options like nopales. Its too early for a burger and I need some food, let me roll them dice and check out their Huevos Rancheros!

They have table side jukeboxes with a decent selection of oldies. Bring your quarters.

Ah crap! Snake eyes. The ol’ lazy pico de gallo trick and not a very good one at that either, it was kinda vinegary or maybe just old. Just cuz it has tomatoes doesn’t turn pico de gallo into a ranchero sauce. I ended up scraping most of it off. The eggs were good and done right, but the single corn tortilla underneath was just lightly warmed on a grill, tsk, tsk. The beans I mostly left behind as they were bland and getting on in age. Life is too short for crappy beans. But the potatoes were really good! They did give me some tortillas de harina with my meal so I salvaged a breakfast of papas, huevos, and tortillas for myself. For only $4.89 it was just a small wager so I didn’t feel bad about losing this round.

I like Astro Burger and will be back for sure, but I think I need to remember to never have HR’s at a burger joint again.
