Rose Eye Building Coming Down

rose_eye1.jpg

The Rose Eye Medical Group building on Broadway (near LHS) which has been vacant for a long time is getting bulldozed. It’s sad to see it go as it had some nice features, another bit of history sent out to the dumps, just like our Town Clock that seems to be lost forever. Supposedly some sort of entertainment/arcade (?) center is going to be built there. But really, if they’re going to tear down a building next to a high school, can’t the developers be made to provide some better protection for pedestrians. This shit looks really unsafe. Check out the pics after the jump.

Look at that crack!

Seen from behind.

Huge chunks of wall just dangling from rebar, right next to the walkway.

Kids about to walk thru the flimsy looking protection.

You might want to pass on the other side of the street. Do none of the grownups that work at LHS look up from their cars when they leave the neighborhood? Seems like crumbling buildings on the walk to school might be something they’d notice. They could at least put some yellow caution tape.

Whaddya mean? These are tough kids from the barrio! Since when did a 200 pound chunk of concrete ever hurt anybody?

  2. Laurie says:

I’ve always liked that building. I’m sad to see it go.

  3. Laurie says:

Too bad they’re tearing it down.

  4. Erika says:

WAIT! The community chairs purchased by the Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council are in there!

tanta poesia urbana de concreto pa la chingada

  6. Aleks says:

They should have at least preserved the tower. That was the best part of the building. Hope the new building will look nice too. Arcade?? I can see the kids ditching school, just to hang out across the street! I thought they were gonna make a Pizzeria and hall. That’s what the owner told me a while back.

  7. EL CHAVO! says:

    Aleks,
I’m not really clear on what it’s gonna be, though I think there will be wine as well, so maybe a pizzeria for drinking and playing video games? If you know the owner then maybe you might have more info on it.

Ed Reyes talked about this place at last year’s March town hall. The owner has been trying to get a liquor license to establish some sort of sit-down restaurant. The property owner has been short on cash for a while, and the location is not the sort of place a cash-rich mega-corporation would want to invest.

I hope they don’t get all Cali-terranean with the design.

I didn’t see any building permits on the LADBS’ “Property Activity Report” site, so maybe they’re just doing some refurbishing and retrofitting.

  9. Aleks says:

I don’t know her personally. I met her a few years back and she was telling me her plans for the location. I never saw anything happen so I figured nothing went through, but now I see it is. By now her plans could have changed.

I do think the location is a great place for anyone with mega money to want to invest, depending on what the investment is for. North Broadway is one of the busiest streets in Lincoln Heights. People from most of the surrounding neighborhoods, including South Pasadena, San Marino, San Gabriel, etc. commute through it. The right business could bring in lots of money there. And taking into consideration that a high school is right next door, along with an elementary school on the other side, that alone could be a great advantage depending on the business. You also have Little Flower behind the property, which some people from the above mentioned areas bring their children to also. So depending on the business that is established there, it could be something great or it could be a bust. I hope they put a lot of thought into it.

  10. chimatli says:

Whatever is built there will most likely be ugly, as most things built on the cheap are these days are. The building being torn down was beautiful and historic, it’s sad to see it go.

  11. Cantinflas says:

I hope the city officials are going to save the graffiti on the bell tower. A cholo probably a lot of effort to climb way up there and beautify the bell tower with his clickas name. We need to be reminded of our gang roots.

    Save the gang graffiti !!!!!
    Save the gang graffiti !!!!!
    Save the gang graffiti !!!!!
    Save the gang graffiti !!!!!
    Save the gang graffiti !!!!!
    Save the gang graffiti !!!!!

  12. Aleks says:

That isn’t gang graffitti. It’s just tagging from local ‘taggers’ who don’t even make it out of Lincoln Heights to get real recognition as taggers. That’s how you can tell who the toys are.

  13. Bob says:

A liquor license with a high school next door and an elementary school on the other side? Good luck with that!

  14. Rich says:

Rose eye clinic is being converted into a 4 story Banquet, arcade, bar (full) site with 145 video games. Building permit is on file and about to be approved. Thats with three school and a convent close by. Might write Reyes with your opinion. I am against it.

  15. Rolo says:

Any updates on whats happening to the property? i would love to see a coffee house.

  16. La Claudia-Lincoln Heights says:

I hate the Bi Rite on Griffin Avenue -I’d take a Trader Joes any day….its so dirty and an eyesore for our community-look so ghetto I think that we need a better/more appealing store in our neighborhood.

I think that Lincoln Heights is up and coming and it needs to take actions in fixing up our community.

    Chale…

  17. Momo says:

A Trader Joe’s in Lincoln Heights? Are you serious? That’s the problem with most Angelenos, tearing down and developing everything in front of their eyes. Revitalization at the cost of identity. What’s going to happen in the next thirty years–maybe you’ll want to replace this hypothetical Trader Joe’s for a Whole Foods?

  18. Aleks says:

I do agree that Bi-Rite does look a bit ugly when it gets raided by taggers, which is often. My vision for that place would be to tear it down and make a community plaza, like they have in Mexico. The place everyone congregates and hangs out at. It’s in a good location. And every now and then there could be a live band or some sort of community event. I guess you can call it the towne square.
If only there was a way to “eliminate” so much graffitti on Bi-Rite; maybe it could get remodeled to look a bit more modern, or even more historic. That would add some detail and feel to the place.

  19. chimatli says:

I think Lincoln Heights needs a historical museum and it should be located in that yellow victorian house on Broadway.

  20. don quixote says:

Not a bad idea Chimatli, but how about the seemingly abandoned Southwest Museum bldg as a museum for the history of all the Eastside and maybe all of LA?
The old Rose/Dupont bldg maybe as an annex of Lincoln High School for computer training or the study of developing and engineering alternative sources of energy?

We all know what our esteemed City Councilman Ed Reyes wants, a combination video arcade and alcohol serving restaurant.

    What a visionary!

  21. Joem Ama says:

LHTS has no real historical love anymore all beautiful Victorians are stucco and square now with single pane aluminum sliding windows….but i believe one day it can possibly turn into the newest hippster find/location. The new building can be a long rectangle stucco box representing the new Lincoln Heights.

  22. Susan Rocha says:

What is going to be built on the property now? A 5 story medical building??

Also, turn down the Bi-Rite Market. It is a huge eyesore. Or, turn it into a good supermarket like a Trader Joe’s.
