Working Class Pigeon Food

Someone should really write a paper analyzing the plight of the poor pigeon. No, I don’t mean pigeons in general, I’m referring to those that choose or are forced to live in relatively poor neighborhoods, they’re a bit different than the middle class pigeons you see up above. Look at the cocky bastards, all healthy looking and semi-disinterested in the fancy birdseed someone left for them at the Downtown Library, they almost seem selective about the stuff they eat. I remember when the Downtown pigeons were the scrawniest and greasiest vermin with wings, they’d eat anything you threw at them. Maybe they were pushed out by these gentrifying birdseed gourmands. In Lincoln Heights, the birds are still mostly working class, and they eat what we eat. Click ahead to check out LH pigeon food!

See, they don’t get fancy seeds here, mostly you’ll see them being fed old rice. This one looks a bit too old for even poor pigeons to eat.

Some fresh white rice really draws them in. The ground here is stained by all the previous feedings, I bet that’s how new birds find out about their corner restaurants.

A container of beans. If I were a pigeon, I’d be on this free food in no time! Well, assuming I had a tiny bottle of Tapatio under my wing, that’ll give some flavor to any dry, tasteless beans.

Keeping with the Mexican food fare, LH pajaros also get some shredded tortillas as part of their diet. No chilaquiles though.

Some sort of food trays the humans didn’t like but left out for the birds. Even poor birds have standards! This must be what the pigeons in Madrid eat, I don’t know how else to understand their gigantic droppings.

The health conscious pigeon set; they’re eating fresh corn kernels!

WTF?!? Birdseed spotted in LH. Oh, oh, there goes the neighborhood.

I hate the person who throws food out in the intersection of Pasadena and Ave. 28 by the bus stop. I’ve seen 3 pigeons get run over on my way to work by assholes who don’t slow down.

What I do is I just get old bread, smash it up in the bag and dispose of it for the birds. The birds in South Gate congregate in the corner of Dorothy & Southern Avenue and they love it.

Hilarious! Thanks for a good laugh. I found your blog by way of blogging.la

  4. I’ve been indoors for three days due to the fire, our birds have been hiding out too. This is a great post. It made me smile and laugh. It is so true. Birdfeed vs. old tortillas.

In New Orleans (of course this was pre Katrina, don’t know about now) the Pigeons were fat, practically obese, because they ate lots of creole, cajun left over food. The stray cats were fat. The stray dogs were fat.

We used to go to the Cafe Du Monde and if we went early and were eating french donuts (beignets) the pigeons wouldn’t even bother to move. Though they slept right above the cafe, they could smell the donuts, but did not move. It was too early. Apparently these pigeons needed their beauty rest.

Can you believe that stray animals sleeping in and being choosy. The stray cats were the same way. They didn’t even get up until at least 10am. I’d see fat kitties sleeping on the grass, not even worried that any harm could come to them.

New Orleans used to be a very fun and trippy place. I remember one time at 8am someone asked if I wanted a screwdriver with my breakfast and I said “it’s 8am,” so she apologized and served me a mimosa instead.

Then when I tried to leave, because it was a buffet, she told me, “What’s wrong?” She explained if I stay I could continue to eat all day and listen to music, which if you’re alive what else is there to do in life?

    Now that’s service right there.
