Rear View Mirror Ad

I think we can all agree that those “Got Milk?” ads and all the lousy, lazy spinoffs hawking just about everything are about to cross the line from stupidly annoying to hostile provocation, right? Besides the big thumbs down for yet another Got Crap ad, I did like how this junk collector made the effort to do his forward facing sign in backwards letters, the way the Ambulance does so you can tell what all the commotion is from the rear view mirror. I doubt anybody will be trying to write down the number from an approaching trash hauler. Still, it’s a nice touch!

It is funny that liberal people in this country consider recycling a moral duty, but many of their noses turn up when you introduce them to people who make a living recycling.

There is a guy who sleeps in his recycling truck across the street from the Bike Oven, and we drop off broken frames and parts in the back of his truck. He recycles them for us, and makes a little bit of extra dough. In exchange, we have an ally in the ‘hood.

    Who loses in that equation?

Really? i’m liberal and i get along with junk haulers. then again, i’m kind of lax about my recycling. it’s so much effort, sometimes, i just put whatever into the blue bin. i figure pissing on the flowers and grass makes up for a few errors in sorting.

I think that junk haulers make a lot of people (liberal or otherwise) uncomfortable because unlike most workers in our economy, they actually do something that’s meaningful and important, rather than just cubicle surf or say “Would you like fries with that?”

Seeing this truck and this sign makes me smile. I love Alameda Boulevard for this reason. People doing work that someone can see, something tangible, something positive.
