Tacos El Chavo

tacos_elchavo

Today was an odd day, full of serendipity and chanflasos. Earlier today and completely by accident, in a neighborhood I rarely visit, I ran into Burritos El Chavo and had a decent plate of HR’s. That was pretty cool.

And tonight, going to see if the gig at the LH community gallery was still going on (it wasn’t) I ran into an extra-legal front yard taqueria. Their name? Tacos El Chavo, of course! Now really, what are the odds of that? I think if I ran into a Tamales El Chavo I’d surely have a heart attack.

One of you meat eaters out there will have to check for me, but I bet they make the best damn meat tacos anywhere!

(Psst, it’s on Sichel. Shhh!)

Huevos Rancheros: Burritos El Chavo

hr_elchavo1

Nah, I didn’t suddenly decide to get into the Burrito business (tacos, now that’s another story 😉 ) but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to eat at this place. You probably think I looked it up online and decided to go eh? Well you would be absolutely wrong. I was on my way up the 101 for some other adventures and we decided to try some new breakfast place. I saw a few recommendations for Hugo’s on Chowhound and they have lots of veggie and vegan options, seemed worth a shot. But when we got there at around 1:30 there was a long line out the door. It was way too late to do some waiting; time to blow this pancake stand.

We drove off and I saw some lil’ cafe that looked empty and as we were making a right to go back, my friend spots this place across the street. Now how the hell can I not eat here? I wonder if they have HR’s?

Spot The Errors

Can you spot the mistakes in these new plaques that have been installed on Griffin and Broadway? Here’s 3 that I noticed:

1. Next to the DWP building there is an alley, the picture has some tall building instead.

2. The clock is around the corner from the DWP, near the old Monkman’s Drug Store. This perspective has it on the wrong side of the street entirely.

3. The clock no longer exists! Some film crew crashed into it and it was unceremoniously thrown into the garbage. It appears that those in charge of it don’t care, yet they keep using the clock as an LH icon. Sad.

New Mural Dedication

md011

It pays to talk to your local environmental activist: the vato that recycles my bottles and cans, always the best source for news from around the neighborhood, alerted me to this dedication of a new mural happening today at 3pm, near Hillside Elementary.  “There’s gonna be Aztec dancers and pan dulce.”  I had nothing else to do, let’s go!

Huevos Rancheros: Mitla Cafe

hr_mitla1

This is gonna be a quick one. I happened to be out in San Bernardino and in need of breakfast/lunch, so I just followed the roads waiting for a decision. These random driving experiences are kinda awesome in that you have the time to look for a place to eat, choosing randomly on whatever odd variants happen to seem appropriate. This sign seemed intriguing, might as well get a taste of the regional HR’s.
