Some Recent Signs

I really do mean signs. Yes, those signs. Por que? Quien sabe, but here they are, try to enjoy!

What is up with Lencho’s these days? They are open at random hours so they already seem to be failing. Then they have some tattered piñatas on the roof as promotional material. But walking by the other day I noticed they have a poster on how to deal with choking, visible right as you walk in. This is a pic from the window, but you get the point. Um, I’m pretty sure that’s kinda bad for business.

I’ve been waiting to review their HR’s but this dish is also completely random. Gonna wait a bit longer, at least until the choking dangers subside.

The stupid Von’s got owned by Big Saver but rumor has it they don’t plan on opening a shop here, they just want to keep grocery competition away. For now, it’s a Wells Fargo bank.

A public notice that they plan on getting rid of the crosswalk by the PacBell building, in the name of safety. I doubt it! I mean, bullshit. Mentiras, or whatever.

How can this walkway interfere with public safety?

The jerks that destroyed an iconic Chicano mural are now selling the building. The mural had been there since the 70’s (?) and the new owners came and went in just a handful of years. They should not be allowed to erase this history from the neighborhood, and maybe they should be held accountable.

No cards in this box, but the laundry lady in charge is even quicker at resolving problems.

cratis = gratis. Just a bit of black marker could fix this sign. I’m mostly impressed that the Asian market has promotional material in Spanish, a typo from them is excusable. Lots of LH’ers get fish and shrimp from Come Phat.

Monkman is indeed for sale. No more 70’s birthday cards, I assume.

Gran Yarda.

An important message must surely be on this sign.

Cellusonic advertises their perks, & more!

5 puntos with a fancy LED sign.

2 junk foods in 1! The separate building motifs is quite dumb.

A sign that I will meet an untimely death. The dog told me in a particular way.

Lincoln Plaza at dusk. A good time to be walking around the LH.

My comment is actually about huevos rancheros, and I’m not sure if this is the right place to say this, pero ahi les va:

I’m originally from east los, and then I lived in Albuquerque NM for twenty years. I got used to the way they serve HR over there, with your choice of red or green NM chile.

coming back to LA recently, I ordered the HR several times at different places and I”ve been uniformly disappointed. I don’t know; that NM chile is so badass, it just doesn’t compare to the watery, tomatoey sauce they use in LA with a stray onion and a lost bell pepper.

The NM style is like a thick red sauce, with some pork cooked in there; or some chopped up roasted green chile, sometimes with meat; and all kinds of picoso.

    Is that snobbery?

Marcos, I am also from the LA Eastside and now live part of the time in NM (Placitas), and I have to disagree with your take on NM vs LA huevos rancheros, and on the food in general in NM.
I have found that in NM the so called New Mexican food is very one dimensional and that besides the ever present green chile or red chile or “Christmas” (both red and green), the food is very basic and uninspired.
The chile colorado and chile verde that my NM and Colo. familia made at home was excellent but it is almost impossible to find anything today that comes close in any NM eating joints.
The Mexican food in the LA area is the most diverse and tasty I have found anywhere and this is probably due to the Mexicano’s from every corner of Mexico and the USA who have brought their own culturally and regionally specific foods to LA.
Hundreds of different spices and chile’s and methods of cooking Mexican food can be found in LA. And the thousands of restaurants in and around LA make it almost impossible to ever get bored of Mexican food here.
NM on the other hand is stuck with the green chile or red chile or Christmas on just about everything. Green chile stew, posole with R OR G chile, enchiladas R or G chile, the tacos in NM no matter where you eat them always taste like Taco Bell, ice cream with green chile, green chile and strawberry jelly, flautas or taquitos are always served with R or G chile and cheddar cheese on top, no guacamole? what’s up with that?
Even the hamburgers come with green chile on them, made famous in the town of San Antonio NM at two locals, The Owl Cafe (small burgers and overpriced), but, at the great “Buckhorn” joint, Big Mike (the owner) will make you the best green chile cheeseburgers (IMO) anywhere. These are spectacular, everything is made fresh even the fries and the incomparable onion rings. Cold beer is available too. I recommend this funky and homey place highly, but call first because in typical NM fashion if it’s hunting season or the fishing is good or whatever, the place might be closed. And right down the road is the famous Bosque del Apache bird sanctuary where in winter months thousands and thousands of geese, ducks, Sandhill Cranes, eagles and other birds come to winter, it’s truly spectacular.

But the Mexican food in LA including the HR is in a whole different league than what you typically find in NM restaurants which is stuck in gear and one dimensional as a rule.

chavo, have you gone to cook’s tortas by elac? we went last nite, they have the tastiest tortas i’ve had in a long time.

I am also pretty bummed that they painted over that mural. As a kid I used to always like looking at it and wondering what it was trying to say. I mean the imagery was pretty unique and surreal. I’d love to find a photo of it.

I noticed the Monkman was closed a few days ago too.

I got a better on for you! As we were passing through Ontario, CA. we saw a sign advertising a “Jard Salle” Now that was the laugh we needed for the day as we were on our way to a funeral. By the way, you’re doing a great job here! Keep it up!
