The Thank You Guy

thanksguy

Of the many characters in Lincoln Heights, this guy is easily the friendliest. I have no idea where he lives but he walks around everywhere, and every single time he has to say something nice and friendly. Mind you, I can’t have a conversation with him as his English is limited, but he knows a few phrases. Usually it’s “Hello, thank you” or a variant of that, but a few days ago he surprised me with “it’s a beautiful day”. Yes it is, I replied. “Thank you.”

Once as I was passing him, exchanging pleasantries, I decided to go back and ask if I could take his picture. As I was walking back towards him I could see that he suddenly got fearful of me and he quickly walked away from me. I didn’t go any further, so this is probably the best pic of him I’m likely to take. I really enjoy seeing him around lil’ LH.

i always feel weird asking people for a picture, but i guess if you ask, it doesn’t matter. that you notice people speaks good about yourself.

Yes! He has now told me “Thank you, Welcome to China” twice. Always a pleasant, if confusing, experience.

Good topic. There are some characters that I see all the time at Lincoln Park. There’s “Old Yeller” named Fidel, he’s the guy always yelling to himself. “Electric Scooter Man”, he’s always sitting in the Paviliion with one of those old 3-transistor radios at maximum volume reading old Kaliman comic books. “Hello guy”, another pavillion sitter with a pocket radio with one of those old single earphones stuck in his ear. The “4PM guy”, he sits all day in his car drinking(I think) and comes in to use the restroom in the lobby at that time. “Miss High Heels”, comes to the park in heels and tries to maneuver through the grass. Next time I’ll take pictures when I’m bold enough. Never a dull day at the parque!

Cool story. It’s always cool coming across strange characters like that that make you smile. You can find some unique individuals walking down any given street.
