Across the street from the new Sav-On CVS, and right next to the ugliest building in LH, an electrical pole sports a nice side view mirror. I’m not sure how long it has been there but I doubt it saw the crapification of the used-to-be nice building it reflects: the amazing mural of the two-headed chicano/a with the 6 arms, each one holding an element of danger (if you’ve seen it you know exactly what I’m talking about) was painted over with a turdy shade of brown that now clings on the whole building. In one stroke they flushed away the finest example of public art, a provocative and perplexing mural that intrigued the passerby. I thought I had taken a picture of it but I can’t seem to find it, anyone out there have one?

Nice picture. You’re a very good photographer.
I remember that mural from since I was about 7 years old. I’m sure it was there longer than that though. I would trip out on the images and always wondered what it meant. I was young then and saw things differently. It’s a shame it got tagged on so much that it couldn’t even be appreciated anymore. I never saw it get preserved like the ones at the corner of Daly & Broadway have. I don’t blame whomever painted over them either. If I bought that building and had to see that everyday because it never got attention from anyone, I’d paint over it too. I would have chosen better colors for that building though, but I think the 98 cents store looks worse!
Thanks Chuck! But I really just point and click, not much talent needed for that!
I think what makes this building the ugliest in LH is that it once looked quite nice, unlike the 99 store. The front of the building had full windows topped by vintage purple glass and the original brick had a nice patina. Once in awhile you could catch a glimpse of a quinceneara upstairs under the grand, art deco light fixtures. Now all I see up there is a row of fluorescent lights.
The strange mural could have been restored along with the one on Daly but was painted over before anyone got a chance to say or do anything about it.
That side mirror’s awesome. And sorry to hear about the mural. My favorite strange mural:
