Huevos Rancheros: El Guarachito Cafe

I noticed that this restaurant on the corner of Floral and Eastern (in East Los) had recently undergone some changes, but I just got around to stopping by to check out the place. The name suggests its Chicano owned; guarachito must be an Americanized spelling of huarachito, as far as I can tell. And even though it was already getting close to noon, they still had the HR’s available. Won’t you join me as I sample their version of that fine Mexican breakfast dish? Well click ahead then, times a wastin’!

It’s a cozy place with some tables, a small patio, an eat-at-the-counter area, and a comfy looking couch or two as I guess this really is a cafe, espresso machine and all. I’d already had my morning caffeine dose but I’m looking forward to tasting their coffee next time. Cuz there will be a next time. They have a small menu but they seem to cover the bases, and I got a bit excited when their description for the $5.50 HR’s included the line “crispy corn tortillas.”

Even though there were more people than I expected on a late morning weekday, the service was prompt and soon enough I had my chips and salsa. Pick, Dip, Crunch! Repeat until your plate arrives.

And here it is! At first glance I thought they forgot the salsa ranchera, but if you take a closer look you’ll notice it’s sandwiched between the perfectly cooked eggs and the satisfyingly crispy tortilla. Nice touch, as it was actually easier to eat them this way. Plus they added a sprinkling of queso cotija, that dry sharp cheese that works so well on this dish. The sauce was a bit different as well, with the taste of the fresh tomatoes being the most prominent flavor, though if it was up to me I’d add a few more chiles in the mix, and no doubt I’d ruin everything in the process.  I don’t remember having such tasty Mexican rice anywhere. I poked around at the beans for a bit trying to see or taste if they had bits of meat mixed in as they were also very rich, but I didn’t spot anything offensive. I guess I should have asked. Maybe they just have a good cook or someones jefita is giving a hand.

All I know is that my quick stop for a morning meal turned out much better than anticipated. I hope you have the same luck!

you know for some reason, i got this brilliant idea last night that i should open up a cute little cafe/bakery in LA. my dad is a panadero and has always wanted to have his own business…. i shall call it “pan dulce”. and you have to promise to cover it in your blog if my dream ever comes to fruition! lol

Damn. That looks good. One of my main motivators in eating at a Mexican restaurant (even though I basically cook it all at home anyway) is the chips and salsa!!

Chavo, have you ever been to Homegirl Cafe? I’ve heard of it but never had a chance to go. I’ve been to Cemitas Poblanas Elvirita. Those cemitas, that look more like tortas to me, are so good.

that would be cool chicanaskies, i would definitely stop by “pan dulce cafe”. My dad used to be a panadero too, he knows how to make that mexican birote, not like the one they sell here.

There is a bomb ass tamale spot if you continue westward on Floral past Eastern. Make a left on mariana and it’s in the liquor store, delicious and cheap, not like those high priced La Mascota ones of overly salty Lollita’s.

I once lived on floral right by there, my roomate had cholos from the Lott steal his car and punk him in his own front lawn for trying to stop them. We’d also get veteranos out of the pinta demanding neighborhod taxes from everyone.
