Catman at Night

catman_night.jpg

Making the rounds. As seen from a moving vehicle.

Where I grew up, there was a cat lady we called Misses Lady. She was one of the few White people in my Boyle Heights neighborhood, no doubt a holdout from the White Flight era, and now that I think back, it was probably due to a fixed income. She went around the neighborhood feeding dry mix to stray cats and lollipops to feral children that roamed the sidewalks, you just had to ask her nicely. At one point, she started collecting cans to turn in for change and she asked that we bring her cans in exchange for the lollipop. Eventually her tone turned sour and she started demanding cans, muttering resentments against the can-less kids. Our excitement at her usual arrival ended shortly thereafter.

Progress

tater_mitt.jpg

Yet more proof that Capitalism doesn’t supply our needs but instead creates false wants, this time in the form of completely unnecessary and apparently also useless potato peeling gloves. Cuz that trusty $2 peeler you’ve been using for the last 5 years isn’t going to cut it anymore, being such an old technology and all. How could you not want to peel potatoes with gravel-lined gloves under a steady stream of water? It’s so Fast & Easy to use! Did I mention you have to boil the potatoes first to get them ready for the peeling? Ha, ha, this is chumptastic! And at only $15 a pair at the local Rite-Aid, I suggest you get your pair before they sell out. You better run.

Huevos Rancheros: Cactus Taqueria

hr_cactus_taqueria.jpg

I’ve been venturing a bit to places on the Westside, err, make that the Otherside for the HR’s, this time around I hit up the Cactus Taqueria #1 on Vine in Hollywood. It’s a small little hut with outdoor seating and a large menu, though I think they specialize in tacos, burritos, and tortas. I’m gonna make this review short, as I’m gonna try and bang out a few this weekend to try and catch up. Click ahead for the details.

Cupid’s Flecha

cupid1.jpg

Nothing sez Holidays quite like temporary and topical window decorations, this time around being related to San Valentin. There’s something disconcerting about these particular Cupids though, with that weird looking g-string/jock strap underwear covering up the package, and this one even seems to be sporting a mustache. Ojo Niños!

Rear View Mirror Ad

got_junk.jpg

I think we can all agree that those “Got Milk?” ads and all the lousy, lazy spinoffs hawking just about everything are about to cross the line from stupidly annoying to hostile provocation, right? Besides the big thumbs down for yet another Got Crap ad, I did like how this junk collector made the effort to do his forward facing sign in backwards letters, the way the Ambulance does so you can tell what all the commotion is from the rear view mirror. I doubt anybody will be trying to write down the number from an approaching trash hauler. Still, it’s a nice touch!

The Catman of LH

catman1.jpg

Even though I mostly see him feeding pigeons, I’ve been calling this older gentleman The Catman since I first spotted him feeding cats at the Bi-Rite parking lot on Griffin and Broadway. He would show up during the evening hours and out of nowhere a bunch of cats would congregate for a late meal. Sometimes I’d go by and see the cats waiting, with the catman nowhere in sight. It’s an odd thing to see cats hanging out on a busy corner with cars and people going by, acting all nonchalant. I haven’t seen them or their caretaker at that corner in awhile, but I did see him buying cat food at the dollar store kitty corner (!) from the Bi-Rite, so they must be getting fed somewhere. I should have taken a pic when I had the chance, oh well. But I do have a few of pigeon feeding in action! Click ahead if yer interested.
