Tacos Leperos

I’ll be brief. “Taco”, when used in a certain context, can have a double meaning. “Hey Chuy, would you like to try My Taco?” Sas!

“I sure do love Fanny’s, can’t wait to get my hands on some now!” Cochino.

Huevos Rancheros: Tamales Liliana’s

hr_tamaleslilianas.jpg

In the heart of the Eastside you’ll find a popular eatery that is the favorite of many, Tamales Liliana’s. Beloved by current residents and remembered fondly by those that have moved out of East Los, it’s mostly famous for (take a wild guess!) the Tamales, which are decent but overrated. People like them mostly because they know they can just buy a few dozen during the xmas season instead of taking the time to make ’em at home, bola de flojos. And in that same category of adequate you find their take on Huevos Rancheros, a plate full of sustenance covered in a surprising green sauce. The tartness of the tomatillos and the absentee spicy heat make this innovation less interesting, and if you consider the overcooked eggs and non-fried tortilla, it’s even more so!

Now that I really think it thru, it’s a forgettable dish. And I plan to forever forget these HR’s as Lilliana’s has a dish I do enjoy, their Huevos Divorciados: two eggs in different sauces, separated by some tasty chilaquiles in a nice red sauce, with an added good-but-just-okay tamal de rajas, ‘ta bien! At just $4.25, it’s no wonder this place is packed on weekends. Be warned: since they’ll be coming in their big ass SUV’s to get that nostalgia fix, the fucked up design of the new parking lot is gonna get on your nerves just as much as the middle-class chicanos driving ’em! Provecho!

Deflated

santa_tree.jpg

A new decorating fad struck lawns in Lincoln Heights this year: giant inflatable figurines! Those big blowup Snowmen and Santas (must have accessories for those that need to own everything) are kept alive by electric pumps that blow air. But in some perplexing statement against conformity, many of the owners of these figurines decided to do it their own way: they refused to fill them with air. Was it a critique of the hollowness of the holidays? Or are they just being contrarians? Whatever the case, I salute their mass act of micro-resistance!

The windy and chilly weather has made LH an extremely nice place to take an evening stroll. If you live around here, I’d suggest you join all the other LH walkers for a leisurely trip around the neighborhood!

Un Regalito

cityoflost.jpg
Hey you, Christmas holiday season, I’m so glad you’re about done. Just a few more hours to go before that meaningless act of rote consumption gets buried away for another year, when you’ll be nothing more than some extra digits on a despised credit card statement. You truly do suck, what with that concept of socially mandated buying-of-crap that is nothing more than a thinly veiled act of commodity exchange. You’ve ruined the idea and practice of The Gift, making it a chore devoid of generosity, lacking any hint of wonder, vanquishing all traces of actual giving. You’re a bastard.

That being said, I’m not all grinch, I’ve still got some sugar plum in me (don’t worry, I’m gonna see a doctor about it) so instead of the lumps of coal you all probably deserve, I’ve compiled a lil’ list of regalitos for you to unwrap tomorrow morning. It’s a collection of software that I find easy and useful, and maybe it’ll help you branch out from that email/myspace/youtube rut you’re currently in. What? Are you calling me cheap just because this stuff is readily available for free on the internet? Well then, just for that, you don’t get to click on the links. Malagradecido. For the rest of you, click ahead!

Crying Hydrant

hydrant.jpg

Day in and out it stands on the corner, alone and overlooked. Mangy dogs bring promise of company, but that fleeting interaction always ends in further disgrace. At night, nobody comes to offer protection, a warming blanket, a word of empathy. Inside the staunch shell, pressure builds. Eventually, it cracks: at first with a little salty tear, then with a fluid stream of inconsolable anguish.

Or it could just be a leaky valve.
