Smart & Final Extra – Now Open

All signs of the old Vons are gone, the only thing that remains are the bad memories. And in its place: yet another corporate market. Will it be better? Can we expect something else besides Cup o’ Noodles sales? Hmm, I’m gonna speculate no. Still, I know I will end up shopping here just out of convenience, so might as well go take a look at what’s happening. They had the Grand Opening on Wednesday, so this market is fresh! Let’s see something else.

I thought nobody did this style of sign decoration anymore. Thumbs up!

Damn, it was packed in the parking lot. People were circling and parking all over the place. I bet it will get back to normal once the place has been open for some time. I parked near my favorite tofu source, come phat.

Aside from all the instant noodles, they have other essentials. Wow, even Celebration Ale? I bet this selection isn’t going to last. Eventually it’ll mostly be Bud Lights and the equivalent. Oh yeah, they also had a 5 gallon bucket of dill pickles and a 35lb container of corn oil, for that fried pickle blowout we all secretly want to throw.

The line was long, here I’m still way by that Wells Fargo bank. But it moved fast cuz they were doing it Fry’s style, with a lady directing you to your selected checkout line.

I would have taken more pictures but didn’t see anything else that interesting. Plus I didn’t feel like getting into it with a security guard about picture taking in the market.

So yeah, its open.

Since S&F sold to another owner they’ve started becoming a regular market. For years they sold bulk to small businesses and now they’ll sell just about anything. If you are throwing a big party it’s the place to go but if you want just a quart of milk, the one in my neighborhood, it’s not very good for that.

Walked down there yesterday and it was still a madhouse. Poked my head in (was with the pups so I couldn’t officially visit), but it looked like they had a pretty decent produce selection which had been missing since Vons left. Bi-Rite’s produce is horrible and Big Saver had a pretty limited selection. I wish they were open later though. 10 PM seems early, especially on the weekends.

I also was in attendance the 1st day. It was exciting to see the parking lot full and the people trying to spot an empty spot. Store looked great, lots of selection and some pretty good pricing on selected items. That’s were it pays to be a informed consumer. We found lots of good bargains and ran into many friends from Lincoln Heights and even El Sereno.

Hope this store stays this way…if they do they would be in good shape and the folks in the area have another good choice!

I was there the second day it opened..It turned into a high school reunion for me..Walking in still felt like Von’s to me just bigger. Yet I’ll continue to shop there if I’m on a time limit. Plus I really dislike shopping at the local markets like Big Saver and Bi-Rite…They always smell wierd and are invested with flies.

I was very impressed with their cheese selection. It’s the best selection from most local stores.

Props to the frys style lineas. I don’t think I waited more than 5 minutes to pay.

PLUS! Super props to the hiring of some older folks. Good for them.

Now…they’d better give money to the Lincoln Heights Christmas Parade. They have a reputation for being tight and never donating to the community. They need to give back.

I was actually there yesterday when i was around lincoln heights. And yes the lot was so full. I didn’t get down from the car since my dad just wanted to stop by Wells Fargo. Im thinking of asking my friends how it is since two of them work there. Come Phat is a convenient place to park as well..I actually like picking up snacks there at times =]
