Huevos Rancheros: Bunker Hill Bar & Grill

Most Downtown spots seem geared for the 9-5 weekday crowd, cuz there’s lots of working stiffs up in them tall buildings. Come the weekend, there’s hardly any place to eat, much less so if yer trying to avoid the Tourist Trap that Grand Central Market has become. If you are in the mood to deal with a gaggle of Urban Explorers venturing out from their suburban OC dens, then you might be interested. But if you just want a meal for your lunch break without the BS, avoid GCM, seriously, at all costs. It’s urban LA as imagineered by Disneyland, in the worst possible sense.

On some random weekend that brought me downtown and needed lunch, I ended up at Bunker Hill Grill because I knew they had a decent vegetarian soy-chicken sandwich. Plus, they happened to be open!

Aww fuck. They partake in that weirdo Brunch habit and my item of choice was nowhere to be seen. But what’s this? Huevos Rancheros with a crispy tortilla? Godamnit. I guess I’ll give it a shot.

Expecting very little, I wasn’t appalled by my plate. It mostly had good form, although the salsa totally missed the mark. People: the salsa goes on top of the eggs. As you can see, the eggs are pretty perfect, in that nice runny yolk I-hope-I-don’t-get-sick kind of way. And the tostada or fried tortilla underneath was also stellar; finally people are catching on to proper HR’s. The salsa was peculiar, in that it straddled the line between good and bad.

Think back to some point in this week, when you were listening to NPR and some generic talking head bozo was asked a very simple question that they decided to complicate by responding with the dreaded “Well, Yes…and…No.” Remember how you were just seething by their lack of clarity? How hard is it to take a stance? That’s what this salsa made me consider. It’s not bad, it kinda works, but it has something in it that also tells me hell no! I think it might be too much cumin. I couldn’t figure it out. I was hungry and in a hurry, so I ate the whole damn thing, going back and forth, wondering WTF. Did I like it? Well, Yes…and…No.  If I was a food critic I’d go back a few times to figure it out, ponder the discrepancies, but I don’t give a shit. Done.

BTW, the beans and rice taste exactly as they look.

If you don’t know what you want, these HR’s might be right up your alley!
