Huevos Rancheros: Swingers

hr_swingers.jpg

Sometimes, when I can’t decide, I’ll order the joke dish just to have a laugh, but this one was funnier than expected.

Pros:

~ Eating amongst a bunch of hipsters. My friend sez it’s good for sociological research.

~ Friendly spanish-speaking busboy gave us 2 straws for the Rocket shake.

~ Water tasted like water. Quite the acheivement on my favorite drink!

Cons:

~ Took around 30 minutes to get my plate. I thought slow was reserved for pupusas.

~ My dish. Circular eggs over black beans, cheese, a non-fried tortilla. Topped with a dollop of guacamole and chunks of tomato. Que chistosos! This is not a proper attempt at HR’s.

~ No beans or rice or anything on the side. Fucking tightwads.

~ Around 7 bucks. Again, que fucking funny!

Lost Dogs of LH

pole_sign_cute.jpg

Yeah, I know, flyers of missing pets are nothing new. For as long as humans have been in the company of domesticated animals (sure, why not?), there’s been notices of alert whenever those companions shake off their domestication and break free, even if it’s just for a little while. Or maybe they get stolen for a longer while, it’s all the same. Missing pets, someone wants you back. And since LH wants to be part of human history, people here post signs as well. Here are some I’ve spotted.
The above lil’ puppy needs his medication, “family and kids miss him alot”, and is just too cute for it’s own good. Hope it made out okay.

Reflecting Absence

lh_pole_mirror.jpg

Across the street from the new Sav-On CVS, and right next to the ugliest building in LH, an electrical pole sports a nice side view mirror. I’m not sure how long it has been there but I doubt it saw the crapification of the used-to-be nice building it reflects: the amazing mural of the two-headed chicano/a with the 6 arms, each one holding an element of danger (if you’ve seen it you know exactly what I’m talking about) was painted over with a turdy shade of brown that now clings on the whole building. In one stroke they flushed away the finest example of public art, a provocative and perplexing mural that intrigued the passerby. I thought I had taken a picture of it but I can’t seem to find it, anyone out there have one?

Huevos Rancheros: El Corita aka Belia’s

hr_corita_boring.jpg

LH locals might have noticed that one of my old favorites, El Corita, has been undergoing lots of changes lately. Consuelo stopped working there, they added a bar, a pool table, cemented up one door and opened a new one, got rid of the pool table, have random hours of operation, destroyed the great paintings, and most notably, they’ve “changed owners” and are now called Belia’s Restaurant. But that’s still a bit confusing…

Furniture Philosophy

furniture_philos.jpg

“NEVER LEAVE THE 1 YOU (LOVE) 4 THE 1 YOU LIKE. B-CAUSE THE 1 … LIKE…4…” Like most philosophy, when it gets to the good stuff, it just peters out. Or maybe someone is just trying to hold on to some deep secrets.

Sidewalk Sale

lh_sale_stuffed.jpg

Every few months the Lincoln Heights Chamber of Commerce organizes a big Sidewalk Sale on Broadway, where merchants, both local and visiting, setup booths in which to hawk their wares. It’s mostly the usual stuff you’d expect in a working class Latino community, nothing fancy, but it’s quite fun just to walk around and check out the mix of people. Here’s a few pics in case you miss it, though you can still catch it tomorrow Sunday if you’re lucky! Maybe you can get yourself a stuffed Mario Bros, a Dora the Pedora, or even a real baby! Did you spot her? JK, it’s only a creepy realistic looking doll!
