I was going to be in South El Monte this particular day so I figured I’d check on Yelp if there was some place nearby that might be worth a visit. Only 2 reviews but they seemed promising, plus they have HR’s! Let’s give it a go.
It’s Sunday afternoon in Lincoln Heights. Thus I bring you 3 random drunks I came across on a quick walk around town. The guy above seemed to be using his extra pair of shoes to maintain balance, not unlike a tight rope walker.

Maybe. That was certainly my first impression on biting into La Monarca’s version of a torta. This bakery has had a fair bit of media exposure, lots of kind words by the foodie (ugh) crowd and they opened up an outlet in South Pasadena. Por que no?
Normally I don’t bother with the HR’s at burger joints since they tend to be universally disappointing. Overcooked eggs are common, often covered with a thoughtlessly made salsa, or worse, pico de gallo. But I had a feeling about Astro Burger. They make a good veggie burger, flame broiled for that smoky touch, and they seem to have some better Mexican options like nopales. Its too early for a burger and I need some food, let me roll them dice and check out their Huevos Rancheros!
