Local Holiday

Lincoln Heights celebrates St. Patrick’s Day for some very localized reasons which you can read about over on Chimatli’s blog. This is some holiday preparation I spotted the other day.

A toast to you all.

Urine Lorax?

In Downtown Los Angeles, someone needs to speak for the trees. Not from getting chopped down and turned into Thneeds but from getting turned into convenient dog urinals. How is dog urination an acceptable soil amendment for sidewalk trees? Look at this poor specimen on Spring St. and the thick band of yellow urine which has been placed on it like some toxic coating. That’s a pretty fucked up thing to feed a stationary tree. Even my crazy cat wouldn’t be that messed up to another living organism.

Then again, since humans have no easy access to toilets around this part of town either, maybe this is just a natural response imposed by the environment. Thus I propose we just accept Spring Street as Downtown’s open air public urinal and toilet. It’s kinda already playing that role, why not make it official and maybe we can even get the city to flush it all down the gutters once a day with some high pressure hoses. That seems reasonable and cost effective.

Won’t you join me in turning Spring Street into the public toilet it should be?

When public restrooms are outlawed, then only turning public streets into outhouses will suffice!

The Streets Are Our Common Troughs!

Piss Away!

Cholula Store is Closing, maybe?

I never took the 2nd door to the left but I am still sad to see Cholula Store go, whatever it is. “Serramos” is the perfect goodbye.

Paris Diamond

I recently saw the movie “Midnight in Paris” by Woody Allen thanks to a great matinee deal courtesy of my local library. It’s a decent enough film (which in this day only requires a minimal story line and maybe some basic acting skills) dealing with Paris in the 1920’s and the protagonist’s desire to be back in the artistic and literary circles of that place and era. One of our local Smoke Shops seems to also be fascinated with that City of Light but maybe not so much the Golden Era, instead stepping it up to the Diamond level.

Nevermind the buzzed driving ad, let’s take a closer look!

Food Stamp Stash

Unlike many poor people, including my mother, I am not ashamed of having been a participant in the Food Stamp program. Back in my GR days this was actually a luxury, allowing me to purchase pricier food items like fresh fruits and vegetables that I would never have paid for with my own limited supply of cash. The diet of the poor is understandable, it’s all about making  a dollar last longer, and to make you feel “full” at the most affordable price. Thus the reason for choosing to subsist on crap but cheap processed foods like Top Ramen and Kraft Mac and Cheese – fats and carbs – its about abating hunger, not about eating well. Food Stamps allowed me to venture onto crazy things like tofu, brown rice, and broccoli. Even after I stopped using food stamps I held on to my lil’ stash of $1 stamps just in case. Now its all about the EBT cards, which are accepted in all sort of fast food restaurants and very few “foodie” places that supposedly care about our eating habits. (But who cares? This “foodie” bullshit is going to fade into obscurity quickly once we all get back to a basic grounding of eating simple food.)

I found my safety stash while clearing out a bunch of papers. I assume that at some point in my future I will be back at the food stamp line filling out the necessary paperwork.

Fuck yeah, I’m down with Food Stamps.
