Food Stamp Stash

Unlike many poor people, including my mother, I am not ashamed of having been a participant in the Food Stamp program. Back in my GR days this was actually a luxury, allowing me to purchase pricier food items like fresh fruits and vegetables that I would never have paid for with my own limited supply of cash. The diet of the poor is understandable, it’s all about making  a dollar last longer, and to make you feel “full” at the most affordable price. Thus the reason for choosing to subsist on crap but cheap processed foods like Top Ramen and Kraft Mac and Cheese – fats and carbs – its about abating hunger, not about eating well. Food Stamps allowed me to venture onto crazy things like tofu, brown rice, and broccoli. Even after I stopped using food stamps I held on to my lil’ stash of $1 stamps just in case. Now its all about the EBT cards, which are accepted in all sort of fast food restaurants and very few “foodie” places that supposedly care about our eating habits. (But who cares? This “foodie” bullshit is going to fade into obscurity quickly once we all get back to a basic grounding of eating simple food.)

I found my safety stash while clearing out a bunch of papers. I assume that at some point in my future I will be back at the food stamp line filling out the necessary paperwork.

Fuck yeah, I’m down with Food Stamps.

Classic Borachito

The quality of your average sidewalk winitos has been slipping. Nowadays they’re more likely to be covered in filth, angry that you don’t give them spare change, possibly fighting with other winos for drink, money, food, or some other unknown reason, and basically they just tend to be miserable drunks. The kind of people that give drinking a bad name.

But before you think I’m just being annoyingly nostalgic with this “back in my day” and “they just don’t make ’em like they used to” bullshit business, let me introduce you to some new winito that is making the rounds in LH and putting those other pinche borrachos to shame.

Lincoln Heights Xmas Parade 2011

I’m doing my duty by filing this LH Xmas Parade coverage report, a little bit late but I blame the parade for not being as inspiring as usual. Actually, it was a bit (gasp!) boring. So here it goes for whatever its worth, which is not much since its a free post I gladly give to one and all to satisfy your needs for time wasting!

Click here if you have nothing else to do.

New Year’s Eve 2011

I was tagging along with a friend today running some errands, here are a few pictures for you to see while you wait for the clock to tick to the appropriate time.

Above, the Rose Parade fools already unfurled their banner a day early. Oh, and they are doing the parade a day later because they have to be at church on Sunday. How is that for a lame way to start the year?

Huevos Rancheros: Las Anitas

Merry Xmas Cabrones! I was gonna send you all a present but I couldn’t remember your zip code and there is just no way to look it up and you know how lazy the USPS is these days. So I sent all the gifts back and I am wrapping this post in a nice bow just for you, right in time to be late for Christmas. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

But I don’t promise that you will like this present because everyone is a little different: some people are stupid and have no taste, others are just ignorant and their tastes should be ignored. I hope you find your place somewhere in this scheme. I went to Las Anitas knowing full well what to expect, yet somehow, like an idiot, still hoping to be surprised with some gift of thundering enlightenment. I was mostly intrigued with the fact that they advertised a Soy menu and remember this place in Olvera St because I had talked to one of the waitresses before and she told me they had breakfast all day, which is always a plus. But before I dabble in that weird vegetarian fare maybe I should check out the normal meat-less options.

Again With the Recent Signs

Yes, I am about to make fun of this sign above but I do it because I understand the sign, it is my friend, and I love it for what it is. This is a snapshot of my neighborhood, a simple piece of paper which carries more information than it imagines. Somebody wants to share their living room, aka you sleep there and help us with the rent. This is typical in working neighborhoods, probably abhorred in the wealthier ghettos. The fact that they fail to provide any relevant information in this flyer is what makes it awesome. Maybe some phone number tags were hanging on the sign earlier but nobody knows. The sign literally reads “the living room is shared” as if you are to fill in all the relevant information. Because yes, you are expected to understand the circumstances of poverty. And it makes total sense.

But c’mon, get your kids to put some basic info on the situation, no?
