Huevos Rancheros: El Chavo Restaurant

hr_ecr1

Well you knew it had to happen. It shares a name with a certain someone I know, so it was really only a matter of time before I checked out the HR’s at this place on Sunset. I think I’ve been here once before, many years ago, just to have drinks with friends. This time around it was the same situation, but we would be eating, plus I brought along my lil’ camera so you can see whats what. With a name like that, how can it not be loved?

The Public Fridge

calm

Spotted near the LH library, someone has taken the time to showcase their kids handiwork with the crayons, placing it high on this street pole so that nobody will come by and tear it down. If you click on the pic above you will see this kid is learning lots of things. Here’s the text:

Calm: I was calm when my mom sed said we were going to Mexico.

Assistant: I was my moms assistant to wash.

Librarian: The librarian was looking for parent to read a book.

Mistake: I made a mistake on home worke.

I like how the kid was able to stay calm when the news hit they were going to Mexico, long a favorite threat of parents wanting to keep the kids in line.

Now even more people will get to see this handiwork on this here online fridge.

The Thank You Guy

thanksguy

Of the many characters in Lincoln Heights, this guy is easily the friendliest. I have no idea where he lives but he walks around everywhere, and every single time he has to say something nice and friendly. Mind you, I can’t have a conversation with him as his English is limited, but he knows a few phrases. Usually it’s “Hello, thank you” or a variant of that, but a few days ago he surprised me with “it’s a beautiful day”. Yes it is, I replied. “Thank you.”

Once as I was passing him, exchanging pleasantries, I decided to go back and ask if I could take his picture. As I was walking back towards him I could see that he suddenly got fearful of me and he quickly walked away from me. I didn’t go any further, so this is probably the best pic of him I’m likely to take. I really enjoy seeing him around lil’ LH.

The Ghost of Ramiro

ramiro1

This homeless man used to be my neighbor, maybe around 5-7 years ago. Nowadays he carries his belongings in a shopping cart and passes the days doing weird crazy things, like shaking his head at full throttle in a circle as if he’s trying to cast off the pulgas or just wants it to pop off entirely. He doesn’t seem to recognize me, but I remember him.

Huevos Rancheros: Southwest Edition

hr_malinch1

Man, where does the time go? This past weekend I was hoping to do a few posts on this here ol’ chanfles blog, I even planned to share a recipe or two, but then all of a sudden the work week has begun and I’m trying to just catch up with lo que sige. I wish I had a giant pause button cuz that would be useful.

But  whatever, la vida viene come viene. Ajuste.

So yeah, I was on a road trip thru the parts of the US that were once parts of Mexico, and it was fun. I was hoping to run into some regional variations on Huevos Rancheros but was mostly blocked in that pursuit due to the continuing presence of meat in the menu description, and as I’ve mentioned before, if I have to ask them to take out the meat, then I’m likely going to pass on the dish. I did end up finding some candidates though, aren’t you lucky?

True Love

onthenod

Found on a bus bench. It’s like you know someone so well that you almost meld into one, and even your naps are done jointly. Or maybe it’s just a little nod.

I enjoy leaving town for a bit but I really love coming back to Lincoln Heights.
