Mr. Baguette

Mr. Baguette makes a great veggie ham sandwich and the best iced coffee in the LA region. Yes, the best iced coffee. And they just printed a new menu that was hilariously fun to read while I waited for my meal, and I’d like to share some of Mr. B’s genius writing with you!

Huevos Rancheros: El Metate

hr_metate.jpg

I’ve gone by this place in Pasadena many times, usually on my way to Pita! Pita! down the street (I love that excessive use of exclamations, I approve!) for the excellent veggie plate, and had kept meaning to eventually try out El Metate. Well last Sunday morning, the opportunity came up and now I’m just wondering why I waited so long; it’s a great little restaurant.

Lincoln Park Carousel Open! Junta Hispana Mildly Interesting!

The Lincoln Park Carousel opened yesterday, and I got a chance to check it out today. It’s a relatively small one, but it’s cool to see it back in action. The kids are already taking to the restored attraction. More pics of this and the Junta Hispana after the jump.

How to make Mexican Rice

rice1.jpg

I enjoy cooking. I find it oddly relaxing to zone out while I frantically chop away at ingredients as I guide them in the process of becoming a dish. Making your own meals is also rewarding on both the sensory and financial fronts, plus you get to mess around with different ingredients and cooking methods thus you can make every cooking session a learning experience. At least that’s what I try to do. Sadly, lots of people still have no clue or interest in dabbling with this ancient practice of cookery, the one learned trait that separates us from the cockroaches. (Umm, there may be some others, but I’ve yet to see a roach pull out a mini-pan to fry up some vittles. At least not while I was sober.) So if you’re interested in some useful human habits other than opening up cans, unscrewing jars lids, or memorizing the microwave cooking time for your next boxed meal, I suggest you follow along with this next installment of my free cooking school: How to Make Mexican Rice!

Huevos Rancheros: La Que Si Llena

hr_llena1.jpg

This time around I get my HR fix at an Eastside location, just a block away from the beautifully decrepit Latin Playboy bar and its tumbling sign. If you look above, you’ll see this place has some falling letters as well (though they don’t look as pretty), but “a que si e” still sounds like it could be a reasonable name for this restaurant. Y la comida? Pues pasen amigos, y veremos que tal.
