Spotted at the Pig Lots on York in Highland Park, a piece of Electronic Crap! Thats exactly how I found it, I insist that most workers still have a sense of humor! Take note of all the other crap available on this aisle: plastic easter basket grass, lace doiley fabric, pink lingerie, Horasense Potpourri Simmer, Major League: Back to the Minors VHS tape. I think I’m gonna buy it all in the name of Baby Jesus!
Please excuse the terrible picture, I took it as an afterthought. What you see here is the genesis of an idea, the visual cue for a sudden decision to document the state of Huevos Rancheros today. Yes, I am a fan of Huevos Rancheros (as long as they don’t come in a cone), that simple staple of a proper Mexican/Chicano breakfast that consists of fried eggs on fried tortillas, smothered with a tasty tomato and chile sauce. Despite the simplicity, this dish is elusive: a proper example is an increasingly rare sighting. The minimum requirement is that the eggs should be placed on a crisp fried tortilla, and with that qualifier most examples fall short as they don’t abide by that one basic principle. This might end up being a series of disappointments but that’s a sentiment to which I am not averse; the measure of our Joy is intimately tied to its counterbalance. Despite the bleak prospects I intend to try out different HR’s throughout the city and see if we can find something worthwhile. As for the bad ones, at least now I can remember where not to try them again!

I didn’t take as many pics of Halloween decorations this year but thought I’d post a few of some of the scenes that I did manage to capture. I’m happy to report that trick-or-treating was up this year and even the local news have mostly moved on to other ridiculous concerns, so the stories about poison candies and razor blade threats seem to be on the wane, that’s good news! The are multiple reasons why the current social order should be abolished: from the refusal to submit to authoritarian rule, to a practical reasoning that environmental destruction is bad for self-preservation, maybe a deep visceral hatred of wage-slavery, even the idealistic liberal appeal to a sense of fairness and our common humanity, It’s All good! But those weighty themes get enough ink, I prefer to focus on little things, on the tiny cracks that reveal a deeper meaning underneath. As Ghost Dog quotes “Matters of small concern should be treated with great seriousness.” Thus I give you yet another reason for a flippant dismissal of the world as it is: Multiple Satellite Dishes!
In LH and other working class neighborhoods you’ll often see homes and apartments with a dish mounted on the roof, wall, or even the front yard. Turns out satellite tv offers a cheaper service than the local coax cable company, so the popularity of these dishes is reasonable. What doesn’t make any sense (assuming we even acquiesce the concept of paying for electromagnetic waves that are bombarding us anyways!) is the need for more than one dish per building; that is just plain technologically needless, wasteful, and a ringing indictment on the capitalist system. Spotted at the local Home Despot: another reason why its okay to spy on people, Low Prices! It seems privacy is only worth a couple of cents, who knew? “I’ve got nothing to hide, give me some pennies!” Might it be time for a movement that challenges this everyday espionage with the deliberate act of refusing to pay? I think so. As my compa Paul Petard says, Free is Cheaper!
