Taco Party Goes On As Planned!

(pic by Cuong Phu Trinh)

Thanks to everyone that came out to the lil’ veggie taco party, it was fun meeting lots of new faces and great to run into some familiar ones as well. We should do it again some time! 😉

Unfortunately, I was a bit busy and enjoying the party so I took very few pics, but click ahead if you want to see a bit of what you missed.

Veggie Taco Party this Sunday! You Coming?

Remember when I told you all that I had a lil’ bit of cash I wanted to get rid of? Well, I’ve decided to use it to help fund a get together backyard party, complete with vegan tacos from Así Soy Tacos, maybe a few drinks, and who knows what else, all for free! And guess what, you’re invited! Yup, you. It’s a big back yard somewhere in the Echo Park area, perfect for an afternoon of beer, veggie tacos, music, maybe a piñata, and hopefully some chatting with some of you readers. But if you just want to come by to pick up a plate of delicious vegetarian tacos and scamper on to your next destination, that’s cool too. I don’t want to post the address here, so if you’re interested in coming by, say so in the comments and use an email at which I can send you the info, or use the contact page instead.

C’mon, how could you resist Free Veggie Tacos?

Cooking with EL CHAVO! : Verdolagas

I suppose going out for another gigantic moon of greasy, bready Costco pizza is an option for tonight’s dinner, but you’ve already done that, so-many-times. Don’t you think maybe it’s time to figure out how to feed yourself, with real food? Like with stuff from the food market instead? I do. So here goes another one of my crappy recipes, an easy and quick one that anyone can follow, and it turns out quite nicely as well.

I know more than a few people that claim they can’t cook and act like it’s okay to subsist on eating out. Well, it ain’t. You need to get your act together and learn some basics in life, don’t assume you’ll always have that drive-thru available at all hours. Do you really want to pass the rest of your years subsisting on frozen dishes from Trader Joe’s, just because it’s easy? All those years of culinary and cultural history passed down thru so many relatives and you decide to squander it for some microwave delight, que lastima. And don’t blame it on your mom for your lack of paying attention in the kitchen, I learned how to put some simple dishes together on my own, in my teens, cuz I was tired of having to eat more boiled Lengua when I’d already told my mom I was a good-for-nothing vegetarian. To show you that anyone can learn to cook something new, follow along as I prepare a simple meal with verdolagas (aka purslane) which I never tried until just a few weeks ago.

Broken Window Theory = 9.5

Here’s my theory: now that the unfinished Fuller Lofts have gone into bankruptcy and the scaffolding has been taken down, the exposed windows will become broken ones in due time. They tend to fall victim to the projectiles of bored youth (err, so I’ve heard) might as well take count before it gets started. Oops, too late for that. One.

Feliz 4 de July

The next round of holiday windows are going up around Lincoln Heights already, I really like the ones this guy does. One of my neighbors told me his name but I forgot already, care to chime in Ms. Neuticles? This one is particularly awesome for a few reasons: the nod to Spanglish with the Feliz July; the gigantic eyed, top hat wearing eagle; the puzzling date of 1838; the statue of liberty holding the torch with the left hand instead of the right; and the word “LIVERTY” on the book cover. Since this is painted on the store front of the Carniceria on Main St. it kinda makes sense, though I’ll refrain from using my freedom to cook cow organs.

Chickens I Have Known

They keep bringing on the hate towards our fine-feathered chicken friends, but my love for pollitos in the city will not be undone. Some white people think keeping chickens makes you a redneck, a signifier of trashiness and general backwardness. Little do they know that these “backward” habits are on the upswing as they make sense to those contemplating the issues related to our food sourcing and those not scared by what the nosy neighbors are gonna think about your own victory garden. For me, chickens and roosters are also great pets. Call me a paisa; cringe at yet another embarrassment to the Chicano people; laugh at my lack of sophistication, I can take it. I know I’ll be laughing, a few years down the line, when some magazine or celebrity deems this good idea acceptable enough for you. I’m sure a bunch of viejitas are laughing at all the people just now getting into knitting.

Pic above: me in the garden with one of my many chickens. Click ahead for even more pics of my trashy upbringing!
