Your Class of Trash

I like living in Lincoln Heights, it’s a nice neighborhood. Despite all the efforts some have made to portray it as an “up and coming” area (whatever the fuck that means) it’s still a mostly working class community, which is fine by me. I now work near a neighborhood that is considered “nice” (I guess it up and came!) but I think of it as mostly sedate, much more car based, with sidewalks that are practically empty during the day. Not my cup of tea coffee. At all.

One thing that I have noticed is that even though they still get their services from the same City of Los Angeles, they get a different class of service: take a look at how these trash cans are neatly lined up, even AFTER the trash pickup. And this is quite usual on a weekly basis. Now click ahead to see how they line up the trash cans over on this side of the river!

Huevos Rancheros: Bonita Restaurant

This fairly new restaurant on Daly join the ranks of HR reviews kinda by accident. I’d gone in to have a bowl of soup but you know, things happen.

Caricaturas Gang

Spotted near the Five Points, a new-ish placa for the latest group of locos that want to claim some turf. And they look like they’re hitting the party stash pretty hard; check out Spongebobs dilated eyes! Eyeore is passing something to a red eyed Dora, while Elmo and Pooh are getting close and getting down. And it looks like the rata is missing an arm, sera que se pica? Party Supply indeed!

Where Am I?

(A geographic riddle for you Northeast LA locals. First person to guess the spot wins an all expense paid trip to said location.)

The clouds are starting to move and I need to get going as well. It doesn’t take long to get from the night cell to the daytime prison but the path is twisted. I pick up the pace, hoping to avoid an uncomfortable encounter with those that make this short distance their terrain.

Attention

Some people need attention. It’s as if life doesn’t happen unless you get recognized by other people, their flashing cameras, inquiring microphones, or video footage. Be they musicians, artists, writers, bloggers, reporters, actors, personalities, gardeners, cooks, or whatever, some of these folks give off that sense that they feel inadequate unless others are minding their moves. That must be a sad state of affairs, always waiting for the social gaze to validate your existence, someone to finally acknowledge your tepid contribution to that massive dump of public input. Many move to Los Angeles precisely to get closer to those that wield the beaming spotlights, hoping to achieve focus in somebody’s frame. Lastima.

As a person born and raised in that other Los Angeles, accustomed to the glance of indifference but still annoyed by the occasional glare of disgust, I’m certainly aware of my role in this city, and wanting to be in front of cameras is not part of my reality. Thus I find it highly entertaining when I happen upon some of these media hungry specimens, it’s like inadvertently driving into a human zoo! I happened to catch one of these media beings on camera recently, click ahead to make the guy feel good about himself!
